Cocaine Bear
Comedies are one of my favorite genres. I love the ridiculous aspects of situations and love to laugh. Cocaine Bear seemed like the perfect opportunity to merge over the top situations with so much comedy combined with horror which is another favorite genre of mine. However, there was a major problem with this movie – I rarely laughed.
In Cocaine Bear a drug runner is throwing cocaine out of an airplane over a national forest and when his parachute fails to open, he plummets to his death leaving his remaining crew to come searching for the missing drugs. But a black bear ends up consuming most of the cocaine, and leaves a trail of death and destruction with everyone it comes into contact with.
There are several different groups of characters that end up in the national forest and all cross paths with the coked out black bear and try to fight their way to survive the situation. No matter what character was involved none of the situations were funny ever. None of the jokes landed. When that happens it becomes do I care about any of the storylines and even want to go on this journey with any of them? That answer was a no because it isn’t interesting enough on its own a black bear killing people. None of the characters were dramatically compelling either. Nor was the horror or action between the bear and any of the characters. No adrenaline pumping scenes to carry the interest through either without the comedy working. The performances were weak as well with not a whole lot to work with.
Overall, it is a very underwhelming movie that you can’t wait for it to just be over. I wish they would have worked on the script even longer to get the jokes where they needed to be.
