Crimes of the Future
I wasn’t able to finish Crimes of the Future, got to 51mins. The film is about the future evolution of the human body’s ability to adapt to climate change, technological advancements, food supply shifts, medical advancements in the eradication of disease and the sensory input of pain for most people. How these changes effect social interactions including sexual. Pushing the boundaries on what is now considered art in this specific future, dominated by performance art.
The main character in the film Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), is sick with a type of cancer that causes his body to grow new organs. His performance partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) removes the organs in front of an underground audience. Symbolizing how we as humans are resilient in finding ways to create purpose and acceptance of the self in the face of disease, disorders, and physical / mental health problems.
Despite being in sync with the themes, I wasn’t able to stay in this specific world where it felt like there are no payoffs for me continually connecting to the material. As if the film was talking at me, instead of feeling that necessary connection to the characters on some level. The entire world and characters feel at such a distance, creating even more work to maintain focus.
Crimes of the Future is available on Hulu.
