Malignant

Malignant is the type of film Mystery Science Theater 3000 would rip on. Despite its "R" rating the target audience is middle schoolers who would be more forgiving or just have fun with the ridiculous plot where logic doesn't apply. For an hour and twenty seven minutes the film is an over-stylized boring soap opera slasher crime drama with supernatural elements. Out of nowhere for the remaining twenty five minutes the film becomes a comedic bloody action movie. I couldn't stop laughing, and had to watch it again just to see my husband's reaction to the film's absurd twist.

This is one of the worst movies I have seen this year. Malignant combines multiple genres, but consistently has a soap opera vibe - bad acting, cheesy music, horrible writing, oh and boring. The Pixie's cover for, "Where is My Mind", used as a recurring theme drove me crazy because it was nonstop in your face, but also goofy. The haunted house imagery is over stylized, how much fog do you need? What is going on with The House on Haunted Hill (1999), type of experimental medical facility doing randomly on the edge of a cliff?

For quick context the movie is about Madison (Annabelle Wallis), who begins to have a psychic connection with a serial killer. As the murders are happening in real time Madison gets pulled from her home to become a helpless bystander to these murders through the psychic portal the killer and her share. With intimate knowledge of the crime scenes she tries to help the detectives solve the case.

If you're looking for a film to laugh at for a bad movie night with friends this is it.

Malignant is still playing in theaters, and on HBO Max.

Let me know in the comments what bad movies you would pair with Malignant.
