Morbius
I can’t believe I sped to the theater to see Morbius despite the 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes. One reason I held out hope it would be better than this atrocious score is Jared Leto has a solid track record of working on edgy projects like Bladerunner 2049, Requiem for a Dream, Panic Room, and Fight Club. I figured a movie about a chronically ill doctor with a rare blood disorder who ends up finding a cure for himself with life altering consequences of becoming a blood thirsty vampire had the potential of being a compelling film especially with Jared as the lead. I was also thinking about Blade (1998), which also started as a Marvel comic. That R rated action packed film adaptation rocked on all levels. Without seeing the Morbius trailer I hoped it would find a middle path on being an edgier PG-13 comic film, pushing the line on that, while still being commercial. There was no middle path and it was completely a cheesy commercial comic book movie.
The pacing is really fast in this film the whole time, but it never slowed down enough to allow dramatic moments to really develop and breathe in order for us as viewers to have a deeper connection and an opportunity to care. Due to this disconnect the film rests on the surface which made me feel bored and gradually tired fighting off falling asleep in the theater.
This is a perfect film for a bad movie night to rip on and talk over with friends. Believe the 17% rating.
Morbius is still playing in theaters.
