The Northman
The Northman is my favorite film of 2022 so far. The collaboration between Robert Eggers and his production team is incredible. I was able to suspend my sense of disbelief right away to be transported back to 895 A.D., and go on this epic crusade with Viking Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) to avenge the assassination of his father, King Aurvandil War-Raven (Ethan Hawke).
Throughout the entire film I was completely invested in the story. At times holding my breath on the edge of my seat, in shock throughout the twist and turns, never sure what was going to happen next. A lot of the time I am ahead of films, but with this it held me moment to moment. Even though the revenge theme is a classic, Eggers presented it in such an original way.
I have no idea why casting directors aren’t nominated for an Oscar, but Kharmel Cochrane would have won. Across the cast everyone was believable where I felt these characters have been around for decades. Alexander Skarsgård carries the film as the centerpiece of it. Delivering a brave risk-taking performance reinforced by the powerful performances of Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Gustav Lindh.
If you like Game of Thrones, content heavy on mythology, history, or even Robert Eggers’ first film, The Witch (2015), then rest assured this film is for you.
I wish there would have been a screening that had subtitles as an option. In addition, during the setup we get briefly introduced to a character who is critical to the entire story, but their particular development is thin in the setup. The assassination of King Aurvandil is shocking emotionally due to Amleth losing his father, and the deep love and bond we see between father and son. Intellectually shocking based on who the person is that kills the king. But due to who this particular person is and the relationship to the king and queen should’ve felt like a gut punch emotionally.
Robert Eggers is one of the most talented directors working today. Never resting, regularly pushing himself, delivering masterpieces that challenge audiences, with multilayered themes that stay with you. He better be nominated for several Oscars next year.
The Northman is currently still playing in theaters. If you feel safe enough definitely see it on the big screen with a good sound system like Dolby.
